"The Still..."

There is a stillness this morning...
    Can you feel it?

It is a void...a lack...a quiet...
    Can you hear it?

There is but a distant dog barking his song of
solitude and obscure cars intermittently cutting
through this morning’s solace...

We have been trained, so it seems, to still
ourselves on this day...We hurry not,
rush not, and push not...We relax,
reflect, and gather in our communities...

So here is an idea, and perhaps an ideal as well,
born from a cliché of this day: Why not do this
more often?...

We could, at the risk of being blasphemous to
tradition, actually change the name of one of our
days to “Stillday”, and on that day we would have
no worries, no hurries, no competitiveness, no
regrets, and no resentments; but rather, just a
day of “being”...

Being still with ourselves long enough to feel our
truest feelings and know our deepest thoughts, and
perhaps, do our most profound reflecting...

A day to love and cherish those around us; those
we know, as well as those we know not...

A day to pray, to meditate, to chant, to dance,
and to feel the oneness that already connects us
all...

A day to celebrate the natural beauty that
surrounds us and breathe in that beauty, and let
that beauty become part of us...

A day to say “Thank you...” to the Universe for all
that is, all that we have, and all that we are
free to let go of...

A day to forgive, make peace, and lay down all the
machines of war...

Yes, I know, that is quite idealistic, but the
idea has been with us for generations...the word
“Sabbath” means to rest and to worship...it invites
us into the quiet stillness of our being...

My cat has figured this all out long ago...She
rests, she stares at nothing at all, she nudges me
for affection, and occasionally she asks for food
or to go out...mostly, however, she just enjoys her
stillness...

There is a stillness this morning...
   Can you feel it?

Will you wait another year to experience it
again?...

There is a stillness this morning…
   Can you hear it?...

It calls your name...
