"The Minute of Transformation"
I had a wonderful vacation on what I call my "annual photographic vision quest". A time for me to get re-centered and re-connected; to see much beauty, and to get spiritually refilled; and, of course, get a couple decent photographs along the way.
I flew in and out of Las Vegas, which is always interesting for me. On my last morning, I arose early to catch some photos of the Vegas strip. I, instead, had the following experience, which came together as a poem.
I hope you enjoy it...Ken
Headed north on the strip in last hour of the
night
One would have to be blind to notice not these
paradoxical sights
Yes, it is night, but the neon echoes high off the
sky
The light air was heavy, full of many, many
lies
The buzz of alcohol was all but wearing off
Those who do not smoke somehow now do cough
Those faithful of the cards now stumbled home in
doubt
The city which says all are in now leaves every
soul out
And, yes, the ladies of the night seek out their
last John
The stream of addiction flows in an infinite on
and on...
Quite a note to end my vision quest, as I took it
all in
Seeking solace through the radio I hear a preacher
declare this a city of sin
So I do turn around and head now south for a final
view
And in what seemed like a brief minute, everything
is now askew
All that glitter of artificial light becomes
washed out by the upcoming sun
The business people arise for work missing not any
of the wicked fun
Joggers and walkers now cruise the sidewalk and
street
Where just an instant before all the hookers strut
their beat
And I wonder if they are all one in the same
The ladies and men of the night now running from
their shame
The street lights slowly fade off as the night
does pass away
The dying awake from the dead...the anti-vampires
into day
A man cannot afford his coffee, but carries his
ace of spades
Another knows not now that he or she is dying from
aids
“Welcome to Vegas”, the sign I saw in my rear view
mirror
In the middle of the desert I saw a mirage which
had no tear
I drive away and Raven rises to meet me, and flaps
its wings, “Good-bye...”
I leave a prayer for this place and deep in my
Soul I do cry...
