Relationship Review for
Pre-Committed and
Premarital Couples

To assess yourself and your partner for your life partnership, rate yourself in each of the following ten areas. Try to be objective and honest with yourself. I recommend asking close friends and family members for their opinions as well.

Rating Scale: Rate each item on a scale from 0 to 10:

  • 8-10: Good - this area of my life is strong and would be an asset to me and our relationship
  • 5-7: Fair - this area needs work and may create some issues, but most likely would not sabotage our relationship.
  • 0-4: Needs Work - this area could interfere and sabotage the success, and level of intimacy, of our relationship.

You can print this page and mark your score for each statement in the space provided.

Please note that all fields followed by an asterisk must be filled in.
    1. We both know what we want - I have a clear vision for my life and relationship. I can envision my perfect life in rich detail that feels strong, very real, and keeps me motivated. I know my values, my life purpose and my mission in life. Likewise, my partner has shared the same with me and I am accepting of his/her desired life.

    2. We both know our requirements - I have a written list of at least ten non-negotiable requirements that I have used for screening potential partners. I am clear that if any are missing, a life partnership will not work for me. My partner has shared the same with me and we have discussed this.

    3. We both have been happy and successful being single - Both my partner and I have each enjoyed our lives, our work, our family, our friends, and our own company. We each have lived the life that we want, and we are not seeking a life partnership out of desperation and/or need.

    4. We are both ready and available for commitment - We have talked about emotional or legal baggage from our previous relationship(s) and have developed the tools to deal with those issues. We have scheduled our lifestyles to allow us to both be available to build a new relationship not based on the past.

    5. We have discussed the fears and fantasies we have about this relationship - We have both acknowledged any unrealistic expectations we have and our biggest fears around possible unsolvable problems in the relationship.
    Enter your score 0-10:*
    6. We have created a shared relationship vision and common goals - We have created a shared vision that includes all parts of our lives: physical, mental, emotional, financial, legal, business/work, family relationships, spirituality, sexuality, social, and recreational. We have created SMART goals that will fulfill our vision.

    7. We have learned, developed and practiced effective communication skills and tools - We know how to actively listen, create a “safe space” for each other, resolve conflict, make requests, and we have shared our needs, wants and challenges.

    8. We have discussed our family relationships and have planned how to deal with them - Our relationships with our children, ex, siblings, parents, and extended family do not interfere with us having the life and relationship that we want. We have discussed the boundaries and balance needed to keep our relationship intact.

    RESULTS:

o 80-100: Green light - You are well on your way to a great life and life partnership. Consider reading Intellectual Foreplay as a way of keeping you and your partner in a proactive position.

o 50-79: Yellow light - Continue to work on the areas needed to strengthen your relationship and life skills in these areas. Consider both of you taking the communication survey and reading The Relationship Cure:A Five-Step Guide to Strengthening Your Marriage, Family, and Friendships and If the Buddha Were in Love before you go any further at this time.

o 0-49: Red light - Take a break from focusing on the relationship and really work the needed areas to prevent any relationship sabotage from occurring. I highly recommend that you read both If the Buddha Dated and The Four Agreements, as well as receiving some coaching before you go any further.
