  • For a true spiritual transformation to flourish, we must see beyond [the] tendency to mental self-flagellation. Spirituality based on self-hatred can never sustain itself. Generosity coming from self-hatred becomes martyrdom. Morality born of self-hatred becomes rigid repression. Love for others without the foundation of love for ourselves becomes a loss of boundaries, codependency, and a painful and fruitless search for intimacy. But when we contact, through meditation, our true nature, we can allow others to also find theirs. ~Sharon Salzberg, Lovingkindness

  • Boundaries contain bodies, minds, emotions, spirit, possessions and rights……the energy we refer to as 'me' ~ Melody Beattie

  • He who angers you conquers you. ~Elizabeth Kenny

  • People who fly into a rage always make a bad landing. ~Will Rogers

  • Get mad, then get over it. ~Colin Powell
If someone “makes” you feel anything, you have given your power to them, and therefore, allowed them to violate your boundaries. Your job is to let go of their energy and regain yours. You are the gatekeeper of all your feelings. The truth is, no one can really “make’ you feel anything. It is actually what you allow. Boundaries will help you to tolerate less and keep more of yourself. Consider this:

Do you have a hard time saying “No”?

Do you find yourself feeling guilty when you do say “No”?

Do you find yourself doing things for others that you really do not want to do?

A significant aspect of healthy boundaries begins with self-respect. Here are a few thoughts to ponder...

  • Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self. ~Cyril Connolly

  • I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence. ~Frederick Douglass

  • A man can stand a lot as long as he can stand himself. ~Axel Munthe

  • If I despised myself, it would be no compensation if everyone saluted me, and if I respect myself, it does not trouble me if others hold me lightly. ~Max Nordau

  • That you may retain your self-respect, it is better to displease the people by doing what you know is right, than to temporarily please them by doing what you know is wrong. ~William J.H. Boetcker

  • I care not so much what I am to others as what I am to myself. I will be rich by myself, and not by borrowing. ~Michel de Montaigne
