"Shooting With My Write Hand"
If you meet the Buddha in the lane, feed him the ball. ~Phil Jackson
I decided to go “shoot some hoops” earlier today. A week after my first pair of progressive lenses (isn’t that so much nicer sounding than bi-focals?) and a week before my 47th birthday, I felt like a hard workout would be good for the reality of this middle-aged body. So I hopped on
my bike and pedaled up to a park that has a
basketball court. My goal was to take 100 shots, as I figured that, with the bike ride, would be a good workout.
Well, I missed the first twenty shots, and shortly thereafter, lost track of my count all together. There were times, however, that I did make a few shots; in fact, I actually made several in a row at times. It was a bit shocking when that happened
(okay, stop your laughing now!) because it was during these “streaks” of made shots that I had actually let my mind drift off and I wasn’t really paying much attention to shooting. It was like I was on auto-pilot.
And where was my mind wandering off to? Into the world of creative writing, as I
kept going into this plethora of writing
brainstorms. Hence, I do believe that I was
“shooting with my write hand” when I made many of those shots.
Part of the extra focus and excitement around writing came from a couple of very cool interactions that I had yesterday. The first was the tele-class “Should You Write a Book?” that my friend Steven Van Yoder (go to www.GetSlightlyFamous.com for more info) was facilitating with a couple of experts who assist writers to get published. It was ninety minutes of
great information; questions and answers; and a thousand (or more) new ideas for me. It got my creative juices into high gear.
The second call was with my good friend Tama
Kieves (go to www.AwakeningArtistry.com for more info). Many of you met Tama when she was here in January 2004 doing her “Living Your Dreams in the New Year” workshop at my office. Tama and I seem to be able to create this wonderful co-active,
co-creative, co-coaching energy that really feeds the both of us. Anyways, I left that conversation last night with another thousand (or more) new ideas. I went from high gear into overdrive...No wonder I had a hard time getting to sleep last night.
So as I was out there doing my best Michael Jordan impression (did Michael ever miss 20 shots in a row??), I kept flashing back to all those ideas and when I did that, I started to sink more baskets. It seemed rather magical, but then again, it did make a lot of sense.
You see, I have a passion for writing and I love to write. Whenever I think about writing, talk about writing, or actually am writing, I feel great. It is truly a most passionate place for me. My energy is at it’s highest level and I am in this amazing “flow” when I am in that space.
Therefore, when I take that energy to the
basketball court (or wherever else I might be), I am living that energy as I engage in another activity. So, I would say that I will always play my best basketball when I “shoot with my write hand”.
- So what is it that you feel the most passionate about?
- And how can you carry that energy with you in your everyday activities?
- How can you use it to overcome outer negatives situations (like missing
20 shots in a row)?
I hope you will take the time, if you haven’t already, to discover what it is that you have a passion for. And if I can steal an old American Express line: Passion...Don’t leave home without
it!
